Norma Harris
Councillor
What part of the village do you live in?
At the top of the High Street.
What is your background?
After bringing up our three sons, I was a teacher in special education for 25 years before retiring. However, my original career was in office work, which stood me in good stead for my teaching and writing reports etc. at St Anthony’s School in Chichester, as well as being secretary for a number of various committees over the years.
What made you want to become a councillor?
My husband and I moved to Angmering 16 years ago to be near one of our sons and family and have always felt blessed to have found such a lovely place to live. When it was suggested by one of the councillors that I might be interested in joining the parish council, I felt that I wouldn’t have much to offer, but after some thought, decided I would like to become involved and do whatever I could.
What do you hope to achieve in the area during your time as councillor?
I hope I have been able to and will continue to be of use in helping to enable the village to retain its rural ambiance, despite the growth in population, whilst working towards all the various projects that are underway at the moment. I am currently chairman of the planning committee and sit on maintenance and governance committees. I feel that it is easy to criticise what is being done by others, whilst possibly not being able to participate oneself, so would like to see anyone who feels this way attending one or more of our various council meetings to voice their opinions and suggestions.
What are your other interests?
I am very keen on indoor bowling. My husband and I are in three local clubs, one being league. We started the club at Angmering six years ago, where I am now match secretary and ‘tea lady’. I am also secretary for our league club in Littlehampton. I belong to the WI and am also very involved with Mothers’ Union: a church organisation. I like gardening when I can and particularly enjoy cutting the grass, which always seems to improve the look of the rest of the garden and our local surroundings.
