Parish Council

On 4 December 1894 the first Parish Meeting was held in Angmering and 11 councillors were elected to form the first Parish Council. The Parish Council has existed ever since and now has 13 members who are elected every 4 years, and serve on a voluntary basis.

Parish Council Meetings

The Parish Council meets in the King Suite, Angmering Village Hall in Station Road, usually on the second Monday of each month, at 7.30pm. Details of these meetings, their agendas, supporting documentation, and minutes (once published for them) can be accessed by clicking on “Council and Committee Meetings”.

This meeting is open to the general public and residents are welcome to attend. The agenda for each meeting contains an item for Public Consultation, which provides an opportunity for residents to seek information or question the Parish Council and its members in respect of any matter in respect of the Parish.

The County and District Councillors for this Ward are generally in attendance at these meetings, and there is also an opportunity for questions to be put to them in respect of West Sussex County Council and Arun District Council matters.

Annual Meetings

In addition to the regular monthly meetings of the Parish Council there are two annual meetings, as follows:

The Annual Parish Meeting is the annual meeting of the electors of the Parish, and takes place in April or May of each year. This meeting provides an opportunity for the electors of the Parish to discuss matters of interest which do not necessarily relate to the formal business of the Parish Council. The Parish Council may also invite other holders of public office (for example the Police and Crime Commissioner for Sussex) to address community matters.

The Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council is required to be held under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, and must be held between 1 March and 1 June each year. In an election year, the Annual General Meeting must be held between 4 and 14 days after polling day. At the Annual General Meeting, the Parish Council elects its Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the year following, other annual appointments are made and the final accounts, annual return and internal audit report for the previous financial year are reviewed and approved.
